Pregnancy and baby showers seem to go hand in hand. Your friends and family are delighted that you are having a baby and so someone volunteers to throw a party where everyone will show up to celebrate and shower you with gifts. Easy-peasy right?
So what is up with the new trend of baby showers where no one shows up? One member of the April 2012 Birth Club recently posted the story of her baby shower where not one guest arrived, and surprisingly many other members told similar stories.
brittany_nicole1 starts the discussion off by saying ?I had my baby shower yesterday, my sister threw it for me and it was beautiful!!! That is until the clock started ticking by and not one person showed up!!! The rsvp list was at 15 almost to 20 by the week before the shower. No one called to say they would be late or that they were not coming the day before, they just decided I guess to not show up the day of and not tell anyone until FIVE HOURS after the shower?. with excuses like ?I forgot?, ?oh i thought it was next week?, ?that was today!? I am absolutely devestated, I have never felt so isignificant in my entire life?. I cried myself to sleep around noon and didnt wake up till 5pm. Has anyone else had any experiences like this??
mlattin replies ?Yes that happened to me! With my first son we invited about 50 people and had RSVPs for about 20. Day of not one person showed up! I was devistated as well. Felt all the same things u are feeling. With my second I didnt want a shower for that reason. Was sure no one would show but ex-SIL insisted on throwing one since it had been five years between kids. We invited maybe 10 people and 2 showed up. I think that was even worse!?
VaHBMom says ?I threw a shower for my girlfriend during her last pregnancy and almost the same thing happened. The RSVP list was about 30 people and only 4 showed up (including myself as the host, her mom, MIL, and one friend). I felt terrible for her and blamed myself for not calling and reminding people.?
rachelle-dec-2009 says ?The day of my shower for my 2 year old dd, I got about 7-8 texts all within the same 5 minute time period with really stupid excuses for not going. I started sobbing and had to pull myself together. I was so hurt. My mom had invited many of her friends so they all showed up but only one of my friends did.?
And for bonus points lottie518 says ?I had this happen for my bridal shower. I was barely 20 when I got married, so all of my friends we 19-20 years old. It hurt bad, not even my bridesmaids showed up!?
It would be too easy to just chalk this up to a few rude people, because so many women recount the same experience. Some suspect it is because they are the first ones of their group to have babies and so their friends just don?t get why a shower feels so important.
But I?m left wondering, maybe showers are an old fashioned kind of celebration. What do you think, is this just rude people or are baby showers on their way out?
??..
P.S. In a happy ending for brittany_nicole1 her mom and mother-in-law got her many wonderful gifts to make up for it and someone from her birth club even sent her an anonymous care package!
