Spiders in Borneo: Entangled and pierced

You?re walking through a Borneo rainforest, keeping your eyes focused on shrubs and tree trunks that might be good opportunities for spider hunting, and suddenly your forward progress is halted. Vines (or ?lianas?) crisscross a tropical forest like a tangled spider web, at all heights from the ground to the forest canopy. Indeed, there are so many lianas among the trees, some as thick as a small tree?s trunk, that when one tree falls from a storm or decay, it may pull down surrounding trees by their connecting lianas. For me, raised in the temperate zone, the idea of so many vines is unexpected. I expect plants to grow vertically, not diagonally or horizontally. I don?t pay enough attention for lianas as I walk, and often I am suddenly held as in this photo of my entangled leg. I rarely trip, but I am sometimes befuddled as to how to untie the knot I am in.

Vines are stubborn foes, but not nearly so cruel as the terror of the Bornean jungle, rattan palms. The central rib of each multi-part leaf extends beyond the leaf as a long filament reaching into space. These filaments can cross a meter or more, linking to another plant like a liana?s tendrils. It would be just another vine entangling me ? except that along the filament?s length are many small backward-pointing spines. It?s as if the forest were criss-crossed by meters-long hacksaw blades. When one catches my clothes, I feel a sharp tug and I?m stuck.

Sometimes, I can twirl around and I?ll get unstuck, but other times I have to try to grab the spiny tendril (gingerly) and pull it away. Of course, sometimes it?s not my clothes but my skin that the spines dig into as I charge through the forest. Luckily, most of the blood lost has been from my hands, not my neck. I?d mentioned in a previous post that Edy voted the leeches as her biggest annoyance; for me, it?s the rattan palms.

Why do rattan palms have these tendrils that inflict suffering, apparently gratuitously, meters from the plant?s body? They don?t seem to make sense as protective devices against animals. Instead, the spines serve to keep hold on other plants that the palm uses for support. But, why might the palm want to borrow support from other plants?

Look at a forest, and a question might occur to you: why do the trees invest so much into those tall trunks that don?t photosynthesize and don?t pull in water and minerals? If only the trees could all agree to be short, they could divert the resources that make the trunk instead into flowers and fruit. But, of course, they don?t cooperate, but rather compete, and their competition for precious light compels them to build massive trunks to lift against gravity and outreach their neighbors.

Lianas that rise up through the forest along the trunks of trees are, in one sense, parasites. They avoid investing in a trunk, but can still reach high into the light by using the infrastructure built by the trees. I like to think of them as ?gravity parasites?. (Actually, this name isn?t quite right, as they are parasites of the effort against gravity, but ?gravity parasites? is more poetic.) Rattan palms play the same game, maintaining with their spines their hold on upward-growing plants. Plants play cruel games with each other and with animals. And you thought plants were so innocent.

The U.S. Travel Association will bring its 2012 Vote Travel campaign to Colorado next month.

The 2012 Vote Travel campaign is a? 20,000-mile tour that will incorporate major rallies in cities across the country in an effort to spotlight travel industry?s contributions to the economy. The U.S. Travel Association members also hope to meet with local elected officials and travel industry leaders.

The tour will be in Denver April 7.

?Travel contributes $1.9 trillion to our economy and supports more than 14.4 million U.S. jobs, and the Vote Travel campaign aims to highlight the strength of our industry and engage its employees nationwide,? said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. ?While we?re having some fun and playing off the current campaign season, the Vote Travel bus tour and rallies present local travel advocates an important and creative tool in engaging elected officials in cities and states throughout the country and informing them about the power of our industry.?

The tour comes at a time when Colorado lawmakers consider a cut to the state?s tourism budget. The Denver Post reported this month that the Joint Budget Committee proposed $9.6 million budget for the Colorado Tourism Office, which is $5 million less than last year and mark a 50 percent decline from the office?s 2007 budget.

The Vote Travel tour also aims to highlight national policy issues that affect travel into the U.S. Vote Travel?s policy priorities include measures that reduce security and visa hassles associated with travel; efforts to promote small businesses because most travel industry companies employ 500 or fewer employees; and U.S. investment in promoting travel. The campaign also highlights the economic benefit that conventions and meetings bring to local communities.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Long before Jeff Bezos became an Internet mogul, he was enthralled by the mysteries of space.

As a 5-year-old, Bezos, along with half a billion people around the world, watched in awe as American astronaut Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon in 1969.

More than 40 years later, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com will attempt to haul from the dark depths of the Atlantic at least one of the mammoth rocket engines that helped boost the Apollo 11 astronauts into history.

Using high-tech sonar, an expedition spearheaded by Bezos has discovered what he claimed were discarded engines from the mission lurking 14,000 feet deep.

In an online announcement Wednesday, Bezos said he is drawing up plans to recover the sunken engines, part of the mighty Saturn V rocket that launched Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on their moon mission.

It was not immediately clear when Bezos' team spotted the Apollo engines. Bezos offered few details about the discovery and did not say how he knew the engines were from Apollo 11. The cost of the recovery was not disclosed, but Bezos said it will be done with private funds.

Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said Bezos was not available for comment.

The five engines, which produced nearly 7.7 million pounds of thrust, dropped into the sea as planned minutes after liftoff in 1969. Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon.

"We don't know yet what condition these engines might be in," he wrote. "They hit the ocean at high velocity and have been in salt water for more than 40 years. On the other hand, they're made of tough stuff, so we'll see."

Bezos acknowledged the engines were the property of NASA, but said he hoped they will be displayed in museums.

NASA expressed excitement about the find. The space agency said it has not been formally contacted by Bezos and waited for more information.

"There has always been great interest in artifacts from the early days of space exploration and his announcement only adds to the enthusiasm of those interested in NASA's history," NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs said in a statement.

No timetable has been set for the recovery. When it happens, it'll undoubtedly take longer to hoist the 19-foot engines off the sea floor than the 2 1/2 minutes it took for them to power off the launch pad.

The sea floor is littered with spent rockets and flight parts from missions dating back to the dawn of the Space Age and it's unknown what survived decades later after crashing into the ocean.

In 2009, a private company salvaged Gus Grissom's Mercury capsule that accidentally sank in the Atlantic after splashdown in 1961. It was restored and displayed at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center.

Bezos' planned Apollo recovery is the latest deep-sea adventure by the wealthy. "Avatar" director James Cameron over the weekend rode a mini-sub to Earth's deepest spot in the western Pacific Ocean, seven miles below the surface, which he described as an alien world. Sir Richard Branson plans a similar dive to the deepest part of the Atlantic, the Puerto Rican trench, later this year.

This will include a Note, Mortgage, TILA disclosures, and other items necessary to comply with Federal or State law.
* Foreclosure ? Unlike a lease/option, the only way to get your property back in the event of default in an installment sale may be a foreclosure. Not impossible or overly expensive, but definitely a headache.

Tax Implications:

* Calculating Tax on Payments ? If you elect the installment method, you will have to properly track which part of the buyer?s monthly payment is: 1) interest; 2) return of principal or basis in the property; and 3) net gain. This is important because each category is taxed differently.
* Recapture of Depreciation ? Many investors forget that even if you receive payments over many years after sale, if you used the property as rental property subject to depreciation, you must recapture any depreciation in the year of sale. That rate currently stands at 25%. Ouch.
* Dealers prohibited ? If you are classified as a ?dealer? under IRS guidelines, you will not be able to use the installment sale method on your taxes. You can still owner finance, but you will be reporting all income in the year of sale, so make sure you properly prepare for paying those taxes or offsetting the gain with another permissible loss.
* Note Structure ? This is critical if you want to properly plan the deferral of gains. As an example, if you structured a fully amortizing 15 year note, you?d have capital gains every year. However, if you created a 15 year interest only balloon note, you?d only have ordinary income until the year of balloon payoff.

Practical Implications:

* Need for Liquidity ? Can you afford to have your money tied up in a property for years? Many people claim to buy private notes but, if commercial liquidity is absent, you may be stuck, so make sure you properly plan your cash needs.
* Prepayment ? What if you structure a long term cash flow note and the buyer pays off early. BAM! POW! A tax hit right in the eye. Consider prepay penalties in your note to discourage this.
* Default & Litigation ? Nobody likes to deal with crap that goes bad. What if the buyer defaults or lets the property waste away and you are forced to foreclose? You will likely have to deal with costs, attorney fees, bankruptcy, and maybe even getting personally sued. Needless to say, make sure your buyer is well-qualified and you have properly ?papered? the deal to avoid huge headaches later on.
* Monitoring The Property ? Even if you sell the property, you will still have to periodically check on things like the condition of property and the status of taxes and insurance. Remember that you must be named as an additional insured on the hazard policy to protect your financial interests!

Lawrence Livermore's National Ignition Facility Achieves Record Laser Energy in Pursuit of Fusion Ignition

LIVERMORE, Calif. -- The National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world's most energetic laser, surpassed a critical milestone in its efforts to meet one of modern science's greatest challenges: achieving fusion ignition and energy gain in a laboratory setting. NIF's 192 lasers fired in perfect unison, delivering a record 1.875 million joules (MJ) of ultraviolet laser light to the facility's target chamber center.

This historic laser shot involved a shaped pulse of energy 23 billionths of a second long that generated 411 trillion watts (TW) of peak power (1,000 times more than the United States uses at any instant in time).

The record-breaking shot was made March 15.

"This event marks a key milestone in the National Ignition Campaign's drive toward fusion ignition," said NIF Director Edward Moses. "While there have been many demonstrations of similar equivalent energy performance on individual beams or quads during the completion of the NIF project, this is the first time the full complement of 192 beams has operated at this energy. This is very exciting, like breaking the sound barrier."

The ultraviolet energy produced by NIF (after conversion from the original infrared laser pulse to the final ultraviolet light) was 2.03 MJ before passing through diagnostic instruments and other optics on the way to the target chamber. As a result, NIF, located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is now the world's first 2 MJ ultraviolet laser, generating nearly 100 times more energy than any other laser in operation.

Satisfying the NIF objective coincides with the third anniversary of the startup of NIF operations in March 2009, when 1 MJ operation was first achieved. Since then, NIF has increased its operational energy about 1 kilojoule each day for three years, a remarkable achievement. Today, NIF is fully operational around the clock, completing important steps toward the goal of ignition and providing experimental access to national and international user communities.

The 1.875 MJ shot exceeds NIF's original design specification and sets the stage for full-power experiments over the coming months. Not only did the shot achieve the highest recorded energy threshold, it also was one of the most precise ever fired at NIF: The energy produced was within 1.3 percent of its goal. Such precision is vital because the energy distribution among the beams determines how symmetrical an implosion is obtained in capsules containing fusion fuel. Implosion symmetry is a critical factor in achieving the pressures and temperatures required for ignition. Moses said that NIF will pursue operations at even higher power and higher energy levels to achieve ignition.

"Our facility's ability to demonstrate this level of precision performance as part of routine operations is a testament to the efforts of multiple teams supporting laser operations, target chamber operations, transport and handling and optics refurbishment," Moses said.

"For the past 15 years, since NIF groundbreaking in 1997, the scientific community has regarded the 1.8 MJ milestone as a tremendous technical challenge," said NIF Operations Manager Bruno Van Wonterghem. "In 2003, we demonstrated this performance level on a single beam line, and in 2008 we repeated the demonstration on a single quad of four beams. To achieve this performance level with this kind of precision, quality and reliability on all 192 beams is unprecedented and very exciting."

Van Wonterghem points in particular to the enormous progress NIF scientists and engineers have made in economically maintaining the facility's optics system while operating at unprecedented energy levels.

Located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, NIF is funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the application of nuclear science to the nation's national security enterprise.

NIF is the nation's premiere facility for stockpile stewardship, the NNSA program to ensure the safety, security and effectiveness of the nuclear deterrent without underground testing. NIF also is providing unique experimental opportunities for scientists to enhance our understanding of the universe by creating the same extreme states of matter that exist in the centers of planets, stars, and other celestial objects. Experiments at NIF are also laying the groundwork for a revolutionary compact electrical power plant design called Laser Inertial Fusion Energy (LIFE), which would provide abundant and sustainable amounts of clean energy.

What they should do, is to look for ways to decorate with these materials that are not harmful to the earth and can reduce their carbon footprint drastically.

Matting For example, they could decide to use sea grass matting instead of mats that are made out of plastic or rubber. This can help in two ways. The sea grass matting will break down and decompose when it is no longer attractive and usable in the yard, whereas rubber and plastic will not. Furthermore, the process of making a rubber mat or a plastic one creates a lot of smoke and other such pollutants, but the grass is just grown naturally.

Fencing Another example is using a wholesale bamboo fence instead of one that is made from plastic. Again, the process of creating the fence will be much better for the environment, and there will not be as much waste. Any bamboo that is no longer needed will just decompose and turn to soil so that more can be grown. It can be used in a compost pile or in a garden. Decomposition is a natural process, and this is how things work in the wild. It will not have a negative impact on the ecological system in any way.

Roofing Finally, a person may want to think about having a thatched roof put up in a backyard shelter instead of one that uses asphalt shingles. The thatched roof will look much more unique, so people will really notice it and they will compliment the homeowner's backyard decor. If parts of it break or have to be replaced, the debris that falls to the ground will not be bad for the soil or the water table.

Ten of Pentacles, Page of Cups, the Hermit. Seriously? These cards? Together?? Normally, when I draw cards, I see some sort of story. This morning? Heh, it will take some doing. The best thing I can tell you is that your intuition is trying to tell you something. Stop ignoring it. Whatever is going on in your life, you're shutting your eyes and ears to an important message and the question to ask yourself is why? Why ignore what could be so very good for you? Why turn a blind eye to the truth that's been sitting up and begging to be acknowledged? Sometimes, we ignore the very thing we need to analyze, the thing that we need to address. When we do, it's often because we're afraid. Fear can be a great motivator, but it can also leave us paralyzed and today isn't a day to be paralyzed. Today is more a day to draw back and assess your feelings, your situation, and most of all, yourself.

Now, let's break down the cards.?The Ten of Pentacles says you want a sense of permanence. The Page of Cups says new things are coming (especially on an emotional level) and that might be scary but needs to be addressed. The Hermit? The Hermit is a card of solitude. Allow yourself the time to be alone, and perhaps even lonely. That loneliness has information for you. It will help you figure out the very things you want and need. Look at it. Look at what makes you lonely in the moment. Is it a ghost of desires past, or is there something else you could be learning from it? Because if you can learn from this loneliness, well then, you'll never better for next time.

If you keep pushing yourself in the direction of people (who may or may not satisfy the loneliness and chances are they won't, because I'm betting it's an internal issue that needs to be addressed) then you won't make the decisions you need to make for your long-term wellbeing. Here's what sucks: what's good (or seems good) for you in the moment, is not necessarily good for you in the long run. So, consider turning your back on the shiny, pretty distractions. Instead, focus in on yourself, even if that kind of assessment scares you. Now, today, if you're going to get information on how to proceed, on what's best for you, it's going to be because you stand up to some of your internal demons and tell them to sit down and hush. They won't necessarily disappear, but at least they'll have to take notice that you're on to them and that eventually, you will kick them out on their rear ends.
