BUENOS AIRES, Argentina?? A packed train slammed into the barrier at the end of the line at a busy Buenos Aires station, killing 49 people and injuring hundreds of morning commuters in Argentina's worst train accident in decades. Passengers had been packed in tight, sandwiched between bicycles and the few seats, many without so much as a strap to hold onto.

Federal Police Commissioner Nestor Rodriguez said Wednesday's dead included 48 adults and one child.

About 600 people were injured, and emergency workers were slowly extracting dozens of people who were trapped inside the first car, said Alberto Crescenti, the city's emergency medical director. Rescuers carved open the roof and set up a pulley system to ease them out one by one.

Most of the victims were traveling in the first two cars of the eight-car train, which Transport Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi said was carrying between 1,200 and 1,500 passengers.

The commuter train came in too fast and hit a shock-absorbing barrier at the end of the platform at about 16 mph, smashing the front of the engine and crunching the cars behind it. The second car penetrated nearly 20 feet into the next, Schiavi said.

Commuters inside the train "flew through the air," a passenger wearing a neckbrace who identified himself as Fabio told local television. "There were lots of people thrown to the floor, injured, bloodied."

"The train (car) was embedded inside the other ... the seats were gone, they disappeared, and people were jumping out of the window," he said.

The death toll was Argentina's highest from a train accident since 1970, when 200 were killed.

Hundreds of thousands of people travel into Argentina's capital from the suburbs every day. The dilapidated and overcrowded rail services, run by private companies and heavily subsidized by the state, are plagued by accidents and delays.

Schiavi defended the rail system at a news conference.

"It was an accident like those in many other countries," he said, pointing to a newspaper clipping about a fatal crash in Los Angeles. "In recent years, we've made huge investments" in the system.

As Schiavi spoke, riot police faced off against angry passengers in the closed station, where emergency workers spent hours extracting dozens of people trapped inside the train's first car. 2 lemons, medium 2 tablespoons, plus 2 additional teaspoons, olive oil 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced (about 1/2 cup) 1/4-cup celery, sliced 1/2-cup fennel, diced 20 cloves garlic, peeled 1 small onion, diced (about 1/4 cup) 4 teaspoons fennel seed 2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves, crushed 2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves, crushed 4 cups Low Sodium Spicy Hot V8 4 cups Low Sodium V8 8 clams 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped 4 fresh halibut fillets (about 12 ounces total) 4 fresh scallops 4 fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell's Healthy Request Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup 1 slice Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain 100% Whole Wheat Bread, toasted and Cut in quarters

1. Grate and zest lemon and squeeze the juice from the lemons into separate containers, set aside.

2. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a 12-inch skillet over low heat. Add carrot, celery, fennel, 12 cloves of garlic, sliced, onion, fennel seed, oregano and thyme and cook until the vegetables are soft but not browned, stirring occasionally.

3. Add vegetable juices and clams to the skillet. Increase the heat to medium and cook until clams open. Remove clams from skillet, cover and keep warm. Cook the remaining vegetable juice mixture until reduced by one-third. Stir in basil and half the lemon zest.

4. Season fish, scallops and shrimp with the black pepper. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in separate 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add fish, shrimp and scallops and cook until browned on both sides and cooked through. Sprinkle with the remaining lemon zest, lemon juice and parsley.

5. Mince remaining garlic and stir in remaining oil in a medium bowl. Stir in 1/2 cup soup. Spread the soup mixture on the bread quarters. Reserve the remaining soup for another use.

6. Divide the fish, scallops, shrimp and vegetable juice mixture among 4 shallow bowls. Place 1 bread quarter on each fish fillet. Top each with 2 clams.

Ingredient Note: Before cooking, discard any clams that remain open when tapped. After cooking, discard any clams that remain closed.

LONDON (AP) -Arsenal's implosion at AC Milan has left the FA Cup as the club's only realistic route to a trophy after seven demoralizing years without silverware.

And if the season is still to end in glory at Wembley, the Gunners don't have much time to recover from their heaviest-ever European loss, a 4-0 rout at the San Siro in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Arsenal, which is clinging on to fourth in the Premier League, is at Sunderland on Saturday in the fifth round of the FA Cup, which Arsene Wenger's side won in 2005.

"The season is not finished," Wenger said. "We have a big game on Saturday and it is a good opportunity to show we have character and mental strength, that we can respond after such a shocking defeat. You could blame and blame, but we have to stick together and win the next game. A big disappointment like that has consequences on your belief.

"We have a lot of work to regroup and not a lot of time to prepare for Saturday's game, when we need to show something completely different."

Even Thierry Henry in his last game before returning to the New York Red Bulls could not inspire Arsenal against Milan. The Premier League side struggled to keep hold of the ball to play its fluid brand of attacking football.

"It was a shocking result and a shocking performance. It was of those nights you never forget," Wenger said. "There was not one moment in the 90 minutes we were really in the game, and it was always the same problem, balls over the top and we were well beaten."

Arsenal is 17 points behind leader Manchester City in the Premier League and only ahead of Chelsea for the last Champions League spot on goal difference.

The FA Cup has also taken on renewed importance for Chelsea and Liverpool, who are out of the Premier League title race and both face League Championship sides this weekend.

Chelsea hosts Birmingham on Saturday with pressure mounting on manager Andre Villas-Boas after just one win in five matches, prompting a reported showdown with his players on Sunday.

"There were not strong words, basically there was a meeting, but it was nothing dramatic," he said. "We all understand we need to do more, our run of results hasn't been impressive but the responsibility is shared. If you're able to gain strength you can go on a good run but we need actions more than anything.

"I think in the end, there are always positives to take out from meetings, everybody wants to be involved, you have to go face-to-face."

Unlike Arsenal, Chelsea still has a realistic chance of advancing in the Champions League with the first leg of its last-16 match at Napoli not until Tuesday.

"We are trying hard, but the fans deserve a reaction, when you have negative moments you expect a reaction," Villas-Boas said. "We need to give fans something to cheer about, it just hasn't been happening for us."

Liverpool hosts Brighton on Sunday after eliminating Manchester United in the fourth round.

Morale is low at Anfield after losing to United in the Premier League on Saturday in an ill-tempered match that left Kenny Dalglish's side seventh. The club was also widely criticized for its initial backing of Luis Suarez over a race row, before a series of apologies.

With a League Cup final against Cardiff looming at the end of February, advancing to the FA Cup quarterfinals could provide the perfect fillip after the wave of negative publicity surrounding Liverpool.

"We are Liverpool Football Club and we have to show our crowd what we are made of and put on a good display for our fans," defender Martin Kelly said.

With Manchester rivals City and United out of the FA Cup, the highest-place Premier League side remaining in the competition is third-place Tottenham.
