An upcoming book reveals that the man known as Subcommander Marcos, who entered the international spotlight as the spokesperson for a Mexican indigenous rebel group in 1994, had been suffering from lung cancer as recently as 2010.

The Mexican newspaper Milenio reported Wednesday that it had obtained an excerpt from the book, written by Luis H. Alvarez, the federal official who coordinated negotiations between the government and Marcos? group, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).

In the book, Alvarez says a representative from Chiapas, the Mexican state where the EZLN is based, told him about Marcos? illness. Alvarez also said the official, Jaime Mart?nez Veloz, confided in him that Marcos was asking for help from the federal government in treating the disease.

Alvarez also wrote that Marcos was troubled by the fact that many of the communities supporting the EZLN still suffered from high poverty, leading to many of the indigenous members deserting its? cause. The excerpt does not include speculation on what Marcos? death in this setting would mean to the movement, or if the group had a plan of succession in place.

Last year, Marcos, an avid smoker, denied rumors he was suffering from lung cancer in a release, though he noted, ?hearing about pulmonary emphezema and cancer led to me not getting tobacco, which is a clear counter-insurgency maneuver. So it?s official. I don?t have what they say I have ? at least, not yet.?

Neither Marcos, who has never revealed his identity ? various media outlets have speculated him to be 57-year-old Rafael Sebasti?n Guill?n Vicente- nor the EZLN has responded to Alvarez?s allegations, but the state official he spoke to, Jaime Mart?nez Veloz, denied at least one of them on Twitter.

?In 18 years, I have never known about a request of any kind from the EZLN toward the federal government,? Veloz tweeted, in a distilled version of a statement he released saying that, though he did share his concerns about Marcos? health with Alvarez, he said he could not confirm that he had cancer.

Marcos and the EZLN, which sees itself as the spiritual heir to former Mexican president Emiliano Zapata, have been at odds with the government since New Year?s Day in 1994, when it protested the North American Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada and seized a number or Chiapas town, prompting a brief series of armed skirmishes against the national army. The group has since formed several autonomous municipalities within Chiapas.

Barbara Aqueveque, Florida Mother, Allegedly Stole Pricey Toys By Switching UPC Labels (VIDEO)

This isn't a story about a mom who wanted the best toys for her tot.

According to CBS Miami, Florida mother Barbara Aqueveque is facing at least five felony charges after police detectives busted her for a label-swapping scheme that made her over $30,000 a month.

Target security cameras reportedly show Aqueveque hard at work, slipping the UPC labels off of cheaper items, such as $7 cutting boards, and slapping them on to much more expensive items, like a $100 LEGO set, before heading to the checkout.

Cops discovered that Aqueveque had an eBay account where she resold the items she reportedly ripped off from superstores like Target and Walmart.

Target originally went to detectives about the suspected fraud.

?At first I thought, ?This is crazy'", Police Detective Alex Iwaskewycz told the local CBS station in Miami. ?How can it be this easy to steal this much??

According to the Daily Mail, when cops searched Aqueveque's home, they found dozens of bags of toys.

"Greed overcame her lack of common sense," Iwaskewycz told the Mail.

Label fraud is not uncommon. In May, a software executive was caught switching labels on LEGOs at Target stores and replacing them with homemade ones.

Retailers are well-aware of these thieves, and businesses like Target have taken extensive measures to try and prevent or catch thieves. According to the Los Angeles Times, Target operates more than a dozen investigation centers and two forensics labs to crack down on retail crime. The National Retail Federation estimates that stores lose $30 billion a year to organized theft, the LA Times reported.

String of security scares at Batman movie screenings

Several incidents in recent days involving screenings of the new Batman movie underscore the heightened anxiety about security at movie theaters in the wake of the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo.

--?On Monday, about 100 moviegoers in Edgewater, N.J., were evacuated from a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" after a patron saw a man opening an emergency exit,?police told NJ.com.

The patron who called the police said that about 90 minutes into the show, a man stood up, walked to an emergency exit and spoke to someone outside. He then returned to his seat, but wouldn't come forward when the police arrived at the theater. The showing was canceled as a precaution.

-- A 52-year-old moviegoer in Norwalk, Calif., was arrested Sunday after allegedly shouting about a gun and the recent movie-theater shooting in Colorado, sheriff's officials said Monday.

Clark Tabor allegedly created the disturbance during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," sheriff's officials said.

Several witnesses told police the suspect appeared to hold?his cellphone in the air and yelled, "Does anyone have a gun?" and "I should go off like in Colorado."

Tabor was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats and is being held on $50,000 bail plus unrelated warrants, police said.

No weapons were found on the suspect, in the theater or its surrounding area, or in Tabor's residence, police said.

A moviegoer confronted Michael William Borboa, which led to about 50 people fleeing the theater, the AP reported.

-- In Maine, a?49-year-old man claimed he carried a loaded gun in his backpack into a recent showing of the movie, state police said.?Timothy Courtois was stopped Sunday morning for speeding when police found several guns in his car ? including an AK-47 assault rifle. Courtois reportedly told authorities that he was on his way to shoot a former employer a day after watching the Batman movie.

Warner Bros. said on Monday "The Dark Knight Rises" took in $160.8 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices over the weekend, which is lower than what the industry had estimated for the debut before the Aurora movie theater massacre.?The movie ranks No. 3 on the list of top three-day opening weekends behind No. 1 "The Avengers" at $207 million and No. 2 "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part II," which earned $169 million.

DreamWorks buys Classic Media for $155 million

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) ? "Shrek" movie studio DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said Monday that it is buying Classic Media, custodian of a library of movies and TV series that includes "Casper the Friendly Ghost," ''Lassie," ''Rocky & Bullwinkle," and "The Lone Ranger."

DreamWorks Animation is paying $155 million in cash to Classic Media's owner, Boomerang Media Holdings. Boomerang was formed by private-equity firm GTCR and Eric Ellenbogen and John Engelman, who founded Classic Media in 2000.

The move immediately makes DreamWorks' December 2013 movie "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" more profitable because it was based on "Rocky & Bullwinkle" characters that DreamWorks had agreed to license from the Classic Media roster. It also makes DreamWorks a beneficiary of "The Lone Ranger" movie starring Johnny Depp, which The Walt Disney Co. is releasing next July.

The acquisition is expected to boost DreamWorks's profits in the first full year after the deal closes.

Classic Media has about 80 employees and is based in New York. It had an operating profit of $19.2 million on $82.2 million in revenue in the year that ended Feb. 29.

DreamWorks, based in Glendale, Calif., aims for Classic Media to continue the business of licensing its characters, selling movies on home video, publishing and selling consumer products.

DreamWorks also plans to mine the character library for future animated movie ideas, said DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.

"We're already making 'Peabody & Sherman.' There are at least a dozen more that have that kind of potential," he said. He did not say whether the acquisition would alter DreamWorks' current strategy of releasing two or three animated movies per year.

Classic Media owns 450 movies and 6,100 episodes of TV shows, both animated and live action. They include Christmas classics "Frosty the Snowman," ''Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town."

It also owns a comic-book archive and the media rights to the "Golden Books" series of children's books.

Tony Wible, an analyst with Janney Capital Markets, raised his fair value estimate on DreamWorks shares to $16 from $15 on Monday, although he kept his "Sell" rating on the stock, saying he remained concerned about the company's theatrical film performance, as well as slowing DVD sales.

"The success of the deal will depend in part on how these older characters (many date back to the 1950s) resonate with today's younger audiences," he wrote in a research report.

DreamWorks shares slipped 5 cents to $19.11 in late afternoon trading trading as broader markets fell.

Golf: Jon Wright wins Utah State Amateur

A lot of people at The Country Club of Salt Lake City wanted to see Jon Wright win the 114th Utah State Amateur golf tournament on Sunday afternoon, seeing as how the 41-year-old Wright has been a member there since he was 15.

Naturally, Wright went out and won it for someone who wasn?t there.

Reinstated amateur Jon Wright, a 41-year-old member of The Country Club, defeated St. George?s Christian Jensen, 3 and 2, to win the championship match at a course he has played more than 2,000 times.

Wasn?t there physically, anyway.

Wright defeated 26-year-old Christian Jensen of St. George, 3 and 2, to become the oldest champion since Todd Barker in 1997 and the first reinstated amateur to win the oldest continuous tournament in the world since Doug Bybee in 1996.

"This means everything to me," said Wright. "I?ve been trying to win it for a long time."

Wright?s father, prominent Salt Lake City attorney William Robert Wright, was claimed by Alzheimer?s Disease in January after a 16-year struggle, and the golfer dedicated the tournament to his father and wrote his initials on his golf ball.

"I wanted to win it for him, so I did," Jon Wright said.

Fittingly, Wright remembers glancing at the initials before rolling in the 8-footer for bogey on the 16th green ? the duel?s 34th hole ? to close out the match that wasn?t extremely well-played, but was tight most of the way.

Jensen won the 33rd hole with a short birdie putt to trim Wright?s advantage to two holes, and appeared to have the momentum swinging his way on No. 16 when Wright chili-dipped a chip. But Jensen made a mess of the hole as well, and his double-bogey wasn?t good enough to continue the match when Wright rolled in the putt.

It was that kind of day for Jensen, who played collegiately for Dixie State College but now owns a flooring company in St. George. He said he never got a decent handle on the greens, which he said got a little softer and a little slower each day.

He also acknowledged feeling tired and worn out from playing so much golf the past five days.

"For as much golf as I usually play, I am thrilled to [have gotten] to this point," Jensen said. "It was a great experience, something I can take into next year. I will be back, and I am going to win it for sure."

Wright spilled coffee on his shirt and shorts before even teeing off in the morning, requiring apparel adjustment No. 1, then changed shirts again after the fourth hole because the new one bugged him, and because he had lost three straight holes to see Jensen go 2 up.

After 18 holes, however, the match was all square, and Wright decided to forgo lunch and headed to the practice range.

Holes 19 through 25 were halved with pars, before Wright took the lead for good with a par on the 26th hole when Jensen missed a tricky 3-footer. Oddly, Wright?s tee shot on that hole went about 50 feet right of the fairway and struck a rules officials? cart before ending up partially under a tree.

He managed to hit the green, and salvage the par, after he and his caddie berated the rules official (Wright later apologized).

"The real key was going to be whoever took the lead first was going to have the advantage," Wright said. "Since I had the lead, I knew I would be tough to beat on the back nine."

Spike Lee: If Obama Loses 'I Will Be Dead Before' There's Another Black President

Filmmaker Spike Lee said Monday that if Barack Obama loses his reelection bid in November, "I will be dead before" there's another black president.

Lee also said during an interview with entertainment website Vulture that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's religion is going to play a huge factor in the upcoming election:

VULTURE: Do you think that sense of historical moment would diminish if Obama lost?

SPIKE LEE: Maybe. Not to me. But to some.

VULTURE: Do you think if he does lose we will see a black president again anytime soon?

LEE: I will be dead before it happens.

For the record, Lee is 55.

Earlier in the interview, he had some rather shocking things to say about Romney:

VULTURE: How do you think President Obama is doing?

LEE: I support him; my wife and I gave a benefit for him at our house. But I think this election is going to be close. Bottom line, there are many people in America who look at themselves and say, ?Am I better now than I was before?? It is going to be tooth and nail, and I think it is going to get nasty. But, in my opinion, if they are trying to bring up Reverend Jeremiah Wright again, they are really reaching. I hope and pray that people are not going to go for the Willie Horton okeydoke.

VULTURE: Do you think people will?

LEE: I got faith that they won?t. Honestly, though, the big question is, I think there will be a block of people saying, ?I cannot vote for a Mormon.?

VULTURE: Are those people voting for Obama instead? That seems unlikely.

LEE: They got a tough decision: Obama or a Mormon. Their beliefs got them between a rock and a hard place.

Lee might find the results of a recent Gallup poll on this issue rather interesting: "Negativity toward a Mormon candidate increases from 10% among Republicans to 18% among independents to 24% among Democrats."

So Democrats are far more resistant to a Mormon presidential candidate than Republicans.

Maybe if Lee wants to be more open-minded, he should consider changing parties.

Don't hold your breath.

Officials: Feared al-Qaida offshoot neutralized

TIZI OUZOU, Algeria (AP) ? It's being hailed as a key success in the fight against al-Qaida: a determined Algerian clampdown that has pulled the teeth from one of the terror network's deadliest offshoots and could be a model for elsewhere.

Six years after joining the Osama bin Laden franchise, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb ? known by its acronym AQIM ? appears to have been neutralized in the nation where it originated and made its name, officials and experts say, corralled into a remote mountain area and reduced to occasional pinprick shootings against soldiers.

Most experts agree there remain just a few hundred combatants holed up in Algeria's Kabylie mountains. The once-feared terror force appears further than ever from its goal of creating an Islamic state in Algeria. Its failure is even more striking compared to the success of AQIM's southern offshoot, which recently allied itself with rebel Tuaregs in northern Mali and appears on the brink of establishing a hardline Islamic state in the little-governed wastelands of the Sahel region.

Without the Algerian military to contend with, the southern offshoot has flourished in an empty lawless region of smugglers in the Sahara desert and nearby Sahel, much the way other al-Qaida franchises took root in the hinterlands of Yemen, Somalia and Afghanistan.

The original northern network, however, has been pushed out of nearly all areas of Algeria where it once operated freely. Now, it is confined to a mountainous region about the size of West Virginia, Western officials say. Violence and especially kidnappings remain a persistent problem in the Kabylie region, but the Algerian AQIM hasn't mounted a successful operation against Algiers in the past five years ? even though the mountains are less than a two-hour drive from the capital.

AQIM's collapse is particularly notable given its blood-soaked history.

The group jumped to the forefront of the terror scene with a series of high-profile attacks after joining al-Qaida, including suicide bombings on U.N. headquarters in Algeria that killed more than 40 people. It has its roots in a decades-long battle with Algerian security forces that killed a staggering 200,000 and left indelible scars on this oil-rich nation.

The success of Algeria's counter-terror campaign provides insights into how al-Qaida can be beaten if faced with a well-organized and focused foe: With limited U.S. help, Algeria has thrown millions of dollars and the full weight of its security apparatus into eradicating AQIM on its soil.

"Al-Qaida as it stands right now has been knocked down to something that's much more like a criminal threat," Henry Ensher, the U.S. ambassador to Algiers, told The Associated Press, referring to AQIM's original northern group. "Their capabilities are much, much less and that's because the Algerians fought an effective counterinsurgency campaign and essentially destroyed their capabilities as a guerrilla organization."

What is left of the group is hidden in rugged mountain terrain among people who loathe AQIM and the central government in equal measure. The Algerian group's last hideout is ironically in an area where historically it has had the least support.

High above the clear blue waters of the Takhoukht reservoir, along a winding road in the Kabylie mountains, locals park their cars, open their trucks and settle down for sunset beers. The last remnants of Al-Qaida's Algerian branch also lurk around here, and in fact six of them were gunned down by Algerian soldiers last month at this very spot. But judging by the evening leisure of the local Berbers ? an indigenous ethnic group separate from the Arabs who dominate Algeria's government ? they aren't winning many converts.

The Berbers of the Kabylie have traditionally been fierce opponents of the Islamists and are known for a more secular outlook in general than Algeria's majority Arabs. But their hostility to the government means they do nothing to help authorities root out AQIM.

"No one supports the militants, but no one informs on them because you are confronted by an authority you reject," explained local journalist Samir Leslous, who has close contacts with Algerian security officials and has covered the conflict for years. "There is also the way security forces operate, you get interrogated by them, so people are caught between the hammer and the anvil."

Al-Qaida is also careful not to attack the local civilians, for fear of further antagonizing their reluctant hosts and jeopardizing their last refuge. So people feel free to crack a beer on the roadside.

AQIM's mountain hideout increasingly seems like a cage.

"They are rather isolated without much possibility for action in Algeria," said Jean-Louis Bruguiere, a former French magistrate specializing in counter-terrorism. "The sanctuary of AQIM remains the Kabylie, but it's very reduced because of the actions of the armed forces and intelligence services."

AQIM grew out of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, the last surviving group of Islamicist insurgents that battled the Algerian government for more than a decade after a military coup canceled elections in 1992 that an Islamist party was poised to win.

Vigorous counter-terrorism operations by government forces as well as amnesties extended to former militants had left the Islamist rebels much diminished by the early 2000s. Many fled to the deep south and the unpatrolled lands on the borders with Mali and Mauritania.

The extremists received a shot in the arm in 2006 when al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri recognized it as part of the network and tasked it with bringing the fight to France ? opening a new front during the height of the U.S. campaign in Iraq. Together with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, it was part of the aggressive new branches in the terror network aimed at the U.S. and its allies.

The Algerian al-Qaida made its mark with a series of high profile suicide car bombings inside the capital Algiers in 2007, including the December U.N. headquarters bombings and twin attacks in April on the prime minister's office that together killed 74 people, which suggested a major new terror force had entered the fray in North Africa.

The Algerian forces successfully took the attack to al-Qaida, experts say, and drove the new force out of most of the country except for the rugged Kabylie mountains and the far south along the border with Mali.

"The government has put down the Islamist groups over the past few years, and from this perspective the Algerian security forces have done a very good job," said Rachid Tlemcani, a professor of politics and regional security at the University of Algiers. "Every citizen now feels the situation is very secure, while in the past it was very hard to travel around the country. In many places outside the cities, it wasn't at all easy to travel after 5 p.m."

That level of security has not yet come the Kabylie, where public buses between villages stop running after sunset and everyone knows that out there in the forests lurk the remnants of al-Qaida. Yet the group does not touch the locals. A list of its attacks for the past four months ? minor operations targeting army trucks or checkpoints that kill a couple soldiers at a time ? show no dead civilians.

What has plagued the population, however, is kidnappings. There have been around 70 cases of kidnapping since 2004, always targeting wealthy businessmen for ransom. Locals say it is not clear if it's al-Qaida raising funds or just local criminal networks taking advantage of the lack of security.

The result, however, is a disastrous decline in businesses interested in investing in the area and an unemployment rate estimated at 35 percent. Mahfoud Bellabas, head of the provincial council said that the lack of security is driving out business and preventing any new investment.

"So far 71 businessmen have left this region, mainly due to the lack of security," he said. "They don't just kidnap anyone, they are targeting the businessmen, the people with money and the state does nothing."

Despite soldiers and police losing their lives every week in militant ambushes, local politicians maintain that the central government ? which has a history of repressing the Berbers ? is satisfied with the situation as it is. In exchange for a few lives lost, some say, the Berbers of the Kabylie are kept off balance and economically poor.

Mohammed Ikarbane, a lawmaker from the opposition Rally for Culture and Democracy, maintains that the government could root out the rest of al-Qaida if it wanted.

"There is a clear will by the government to maintain the Islamic threat in the Kabylie to oppress the people," he said.

For its part, al-Qaida has recently attempted to reach out to the Berbers of the Kabylie, to fight against their common enemy of the government.

In December they issued on jihadist websites their first ever Berber-language video in which a masked militant from the Kabylie region appealed to the people to rise up against the government.

Abu Hazim Moudoud evoked past Berber uprisings and demonstrations against the government and urged them to take up arms, while assuring them that al-Qaida would not harm them.

"If we wanted to kill the people, we would have done so, we possess weapons, bombs and mortars," he said. "For 20 years, the mujahedeen have been in the Kabylie region and they never harmed the people."

But there has been no sign of any sudden surge of support for AQIM in the Kabylie.

"This is a region that has always confronted the Islamists and the state at the same time," said Bellabas. "They are both monsters created together."
